Week 5 in Our Elementary Studio!

Hello Artists and Families!

It has been another fantastic week in our studio!  A lot of great things are happening and I can't wait to share them with you!  Check out this week's Friday 5 below!

Artfully yours,
Ms. Sam

1.) Many crews starting opening the drawing center!  Crayons, colored pencils, and markers oh my!  One of the best things about our choice-based studio is that artists have the power to choose what materials they work with.  This week those choices expanded for students with the opening of 3 familiar favorites at the drawing center.  Artists practiced moving responsibly to get what they need and take it to their seats to get started.  Lots of wonderful drawings were created with these new materials this week... check out a few of them below!

2.) A few crews started opening the collage center!  Opening day of the collage center has to be one of my FAVORITE days in our studio... suddenly there is just so much beautiful color everywhere!  Responsible and ready Friday crews opened collage today; the rest of our responsible and ready crews will open this station next week!

3.) Our Share Bag is growing!  Share is such an important part of our day in art together.  Often, the best ideas come from listening to other artists and being inspired by their work.  This week we added "dice whip around" to our share bag.  In this share, one artist rolls our dice and then everyone has that many words to share what they worked on that day in art.

4.) We talked about the PTA reflections contest!  This year's theme is "Within Reach," which feels full of lots of interesting potential!  All students are welcome to participate and more information on the contest is available in the art room and in the front lobby.  Submissions are not due until Monday November 6th, so there is still plenty of time to create!

5.) We tried out our CLEAN UP SONG!!  Our goal is always to have a quick, quiet, and safe clean up where we leave no trace and leave the room ready for the next group of artists who come in.  Our clean up song is one tool we use to help us meet this goal... the song is 4 minutes long and gives great tips about leaving no trace.  Classes are now trying to see if they can finish cleaning up and be silently circled up ready for share before the song ends!

***Cool stuff happening outside of our studio alert!!
This weekend, Mr. David and I are excited to be participating in School 33 Art Center's Open Studio Tour!  Saturday and Sunday from 10-6, artists all throughout Baltimore City will open their studios to the public to allow a glimpse into how artists work.  Mr. David and I are hoping to find some artist experts to share with Monarch artists!  Not all artists' work on the studio tour is "school-appropriate," so if you plan to attend, be prepared for this!  For more info, visit School 33's website.
